How to Read and Analyze a Poem
  1. Before: Photocopy or print the poem so you can annotate as you read.
  2. Preview: Consider the title, poetic structure, repeated words, etc.
  3. First Reading: Read the poem straight through for enjoyment; pause and reflect afterwards.
  4. Second Reading: Search for and define Q-words.  Record definitions right on the sheet.
  5. Third Reading: Consider structure and sound.  Look at the form of stanzas, rhyme scheme, alliteration, etc.  Take notes.
  6. Fourth Reading: Examine figurative language.  Figure out metaphors, symbols, imagery, etc.
  7. Fifth Reading: Read for meaning.  Consider emotions, theme, tone/mood, message, etc.  Take notes.
  8. Sixth Reading: Read for enjoyment one last time.
  9. Evaluate: What is the author trying to say in the poem?  Record your answer.
